本論文主要目的在應用形象圖式及形象圖式轉換與隱喻和轉喻理論解釋現代漢語方位詞「上」多義和意義延伸的現象，並描繪「上」的語義網絡。
第一章，概述研究動機和方法以及研究上的限制，並對論文各章的主要內容做一簡短介紹。
第二章，界定對本論文研究的對象一現代漢語方位詞，並指出現代漢語方位詞的語言特性，並討論先前的相關研究。
第三章，本論文研究的主要理論背景一形象圖式、形象圖式轉換、隱喻、轉喻等理論的闡釋。
第四章，藉由形象圖式理論分析「上」的基本空間意義，並利用形象圖式轉換解釋不同形象圖式之間的關聯，描繪出基本意義網絡。
第五章，分析「上」的意義延伸，並把語句中「上」本身的意義延伸和語境中相鄰成份的意義延伸區分開來，然後分別分析二者的隱喻映射和轉喻延伸，最後，繪出一完整語義網絡圖。
第六章，對方位詞「上」在上古漢語、中古漢語及近代漢語三個時期中的語言形式和意義用法的特性及演變做概略的觀察，歸納及比較，藉以對現代漢語方位詞「上」的語義特性及意義延伸做一比較和參照。
第七章，本論文的總結，對前幾章的論述做一回顧與檢討，並提出本論文研究的展望。
