Jazz is a modern musical language that beats to its own rhythm. This paper will explore how this Western musical genre has been assimilated and/or adapted in major cities in East Asia, with a focus on Taipei and Shanghai and Tokyo as comparison points. I will examine the socio-historical development of jazz music in each city through the impact of cultural imperialism and nationalism, the development of modernism, and as soundscapes. By gathering data from modern-day case studies and performing personal interviews and surveys in the search for authenticity, I will describe the current state of jazz music in Taipei and make recommendations for future promotion.
