Hawthorne's The ScarletLeuter, Graham Greene's The Heart of the
Matter, and A Burnt-Out Case. Theprotagonists Dimmesdale,
Scobie and Querry, as viewed in the light ofAugustine's
doctrine of love, may be seen to dramati cally experience
bothhuman love--"disordered love" for Augustine--and divine
love--the love of God.Those who love God, Augustine suggests,
dwell in the City of God, while thosewho love humans only
live in the City of the world. Here I discuss therelation,
in these three characters, between human and divine love, and
theability of each to move from or through the former
tothe latter, from orthrough the City of the World to the City
of God.
