本研究分析從採自中國華南貴州一帶,五隻外觀保持良好的早石碳紀腕足動物化石的碳氧同位素成分,作為研究中國華南地區古溫度特性的指標。本論文以岩石切片顯微鏡、陰極射線顯微鏡及電子微探針測量元素含量等方法來檢視標本保存度。
殼體中NL(未受成岩作用影響)的部分,其d18O數值約落在-6.0?~-1.7?之間,平均值為-3.5 ±1.2?(1σ;N=54);L(受到成岩作用影響)部份的d18O數值約落在-9.9?~-3.4?之間,平均值為 -6.3 ±1.8?(1σ;N=28)。Visean階NL部份的d18O數值範圍及平均值為-5.2?~-1.8?;(平均值:-3.5 ± 0.6?),而Serpukhovian階NL部份的d18O數值範圍及平均值為-6.0?~-1.7?;(平均值:-3.5 ± 0.5?)。
以Visean階和Serpukhovian階兩個層位來看,在中國華南地區可以看到在Serpukhovian階層位的標本之氧同位素數值變化範圍(4.3?)較Visean階層位的變化範圍(3.4?)大。因此我們推測由Visean階到Serpukhovian階於中國華南地區有季節性溫差加強或水文環境改變的現象。
假設早石碳紀的海水d18O數值為-1.0?(SMOW),本研究計算出中國華南地區在早石碳紀晚期的年平均溫度,其範圍約介於24℃~29℃之間,平均溫度為27℃。和石碳紀俄羅斯台地和古氣候模式模擬所推測出的Visean時期赤道地區海水表面溫度範圍相吻合,也與現今熱帶地區海水表面溫度的範圍相符合。而在年溫差變化方面,本研究計算出的結果是介在2℃~12℃之間和歐洲的結果亦相符合,因此我們認為在早石碳紀晚期中國華南地區的古溫度特性與在勞倫西亞大陸東岸的歐洲地區相似,卻和西岸的北美洲有顯著的不同。
