With the rapid advancement of technology, human lifestyles continue to change, and an increasing number of families provide children and teenagers with mobile phones during their developmental years. As a result, mobile phones and social media have become indispensable parts of the daily lives and cultures of contemporary teens. Adolescence is a critical period for developing personal identity through social interactions. For the digital-native generation, the internet is not only a key medium and space for social interaction but also offers unprecedented opportunities for self-exploration and understanding the world.
This study finds that social media platforms provide teens with convenient tools for self-expression and relationship management. However, these platforms also encourage them to strive for an idealized online persona and to seek excessive validation and approval, potentially leading to an over-reliance on external evaluations. Additionally, features such as "private accounts" and "close friends" cater to teenagers' needs for managing complex social dynamics but simultaneously increase the pressures of privacy and relationship management, making interpersonal interactions more fragmented and superficial. While the mediation of daily life through mobile phones provides teens with a space to escape reality and alleviate stress temporarily, excessive dependence on technology may weaken their ability to cope with solitude.
This study focuses on church-going adolescents in the Taipei and New Taipei City regions, employing two qualitative research methods: focus group discussions and online/offline participatory observations. The study observed 16 teenagers aged 14 to 18. It explores how contemporary Taiwanese teens navigate their social and cultural context, using mobile phones and social media to construct self-identity, engage in self-performance and consumption, and transition between different social media platforms to manage their online and offline relationships. Through the perspective of teenagers, this study aims to depict the everyday experiences mediated by technology and provide academia, parents, and educators with a more diverse and in-depth understanding when addressing contemporary teens issues.
