The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between parental psychological control and social anxiety in emerging adulthood, and further to investigate whether rejection sensitivity and differentiation of self would mediate the relationship between parental psychological control and social anxiety. The participants included 955 emerging adults (364 males and 591 females), in the age range of 18 to 25 (average age is 21.41 years old). The measurement tools used in this study were the Chinese version of the “Parental Psychological Control Questionnaire”, “Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents”, “Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire”, and “Differentiation of Self Inventory”. After controlling for gender and age, the results demonstrated that: (1) parental psychological control positively predicted social anxiety; (2) parental psychological control positively predicted rejection sensitivity; (3) rejection sensitivity positively predicted social anxiety; (4) parental psychological control negatively predicted differentiation of self; (5) differentiation of self negatively predicted social anxiety; (6) rejection sensitivity partially mediated the association between psychological control and social anxiety; and (7) differentiation of self partially mediated the association between psychological control and social anxiety. Based on the results, implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.
