二十世紀許多音樂上的新思潮蓬勃發展，而在後現代主義（Post-Modernism）中，為反動極為複雜的完全序列主義（Integral Serialism），在七○至八○年代，美國興起的極限主義（Minimalism），音樂開始回歸到調性，而作曲家賈克曼（Jacob Druckman, 1928-1996）提出的口號，「從一九六八年開始，新浪漫主義？」，「新浪漫主義」（Neo-Romanticism）的名詞因而誕生，此風格洋溢著音樂主觀與熱情，具有作曲家個人的情感與獨特性，經常使用引用與拚貼的手法，像是作曲家的對於時間、歷史、記憶或品味的一種記錄。
本論文主要是以新浪漫主義之風格為切入點，探討作曲家在音樂創作的想法與心境，以及作曲的理念，最後介紹自我創作的作品。論文共分為六章，包括第一章前言，陳述了論文大致的架構；第二、三章，探討1970年後的美國音樂，極限音樂回歸調性的思潮，新浪漫主義的興起與發展；第四章則舉了四位作曲家為例，分別是羅克伯（George Rochberg, 1918-）、戴爾崔迪西（David Del Tredici, 1937-）、艾伯特（Stephen Albert, 1941-1992）與柯瑞良諾（John Corigliano, 1938-），分別各舉了一首作品做簡要的介紹與評析；第五章則為個人的創作作品分析，以此風格做為創作的理念與實踐；第六章則為此論文之結論。
由於國內對於1970年後應運而生的新浪漫主義，鮮少有任何論文研究，希冀此論文能為此風格勾勒出中文論著的起點，並為個人創作之作品尋找出一條新的方向與出路。
