本論文針對美國當代作曲家奈德．羅倫(Ned Rorem, 1923)以美國詩人華特．惠特曼(Walt Whitman, 1819-1892)的詩作：《青春、白晝、老年與夜》(Youth, Day, Old Age, and Night)、《清晨的亞當》(As Adam Early in the Morning)、《我常常靜靜地走向你》(O You Whom I Often and Silently Come)、《給你》(To You)、《你是新人嗎？》(Are You The New Person)、《充滿活力，現在》(Full of Life Now)譜曲的美國藝術歌曲，透過文獻進行研究探討。其中包含作曲家羅倫的生平、藝術歌曲的創作理念與音樂風格；詩人惠特曼的生平、詩作風格；最後以詩歌的翻譯和解析綜合樂曲分析觀點輔助演唱與詮釋。
