The present study aims to explore the living experiences of people with intellectual disabilities at group homes. Three people with intellectual disabilities who have stayed at a group home for more than one year, their significant others and the staff at the group home were invited by the researcher to participate in the study.
Qualitative research is applied in this study. The data were obtained from observation, interviews, and gathering of relevant information. Next, they were organized and analyzed. First presented in the research result were the life stories of the three major participants before and after moving to the group home. Common points found to be shared by all three stories were then indicated: difficulties at their families of origin, and their changes at the group home. Finally discussed were the features of a healthy family that the group home had which caused these participants to change.
The research result shows that all participants came to the group home with certain difficulties in their families, such as aging of both the people with intellectual disabilities themselves and their parents or the parents’ self-perception of lacking proper attitude and means to treat their children with intellectual disabilities. All three participants had prominent changes after moving into the group home and demonstrated positive development. Their changes included: (1) increase of adaptive behavior, such as forming good living habits, developing the ability to interact with others, acquiring skill in money management, exploiting their potential, molding positive character, and bettering self-control (2) decrease of maladaptive behavior, such as discontinuing offensive and destructive behavior, being less possessive about the staff, improving fixed behavior and bad habits like gluttony, theft, impulsive shopping, careless spending, and etc. (3) increase of community participation, such as the use of community resources and the participation in community activities. These changes of the three participants resulted from the staff’s efforts to run the group home in a way that a family is kept. The group home had many features that were found in healthy families, which made the three participants feel a sense of identification and that of belonging toward their group home. As a result, many positive changes were made.
Based on the above findings, suggestions were offered respectively to practitioners at group homes and other institutions providing night accommodation service, families of people with intellectual disabilities, the authorities concerned, and future researchers.
