聯篇歌曲《冬之語》創作於一九五三年，由八首歌組合而成，是布瑞頓十二組聯篇歌曲中的第七組作品，並引用二十世紀英國著名詩人湯瑪斯．哈代 ( Thomas Hardy, 1849-1928 ) 的詩作；除了相似於以往聯篇歌曲所呈現的敘事性和描寫景物，哈代在詩中描述的是個人的都市生活體驗和強調現實主義的表現。

本論文共分為五章，分別探討有關布瑞頓聯篇歌曲《冬之語》的種種背景。第一章說明本論文的研究動機與目的，第二章敘述英國作曲家布瑞頓的時代背景與創作手法，及詩人哈代的生平和重要作品概述；第三章以英國藝術歌曲的發展來探討布瑞頓聯篇歌曲《冬之語》的創作背景；第四章從詩詞與音樂的關聯，來分析布瑞頓在音樂上對字義的特殊描繪，並以鋼琴合作者的角度切入，探討與聲樂家合作過程中所應注意的種種細節；第五章總結布瑞頓聯篇歌曲《冬之語》八首作品之相異性並做總結。
