This study aims to understand the current state of sexuality implicit attitude and sexual orientation counselor competency among counseling professionals in Taiwan, and to explore how various demographic variables and professional training experiences affect both. The participants included individuals with counseling psychologist licenses in Taiwan, those who have completed full-time counseling internships but have not yet obtained their licenses, and those currently undergoing full-time counseling internships. Data were collected through convenience sampling via an online questionnaire, using the Implicit Association Test (IAT) and the Sexual Orientation Counselor Competency Scale (SOCCS) as the primary research instruments. A total of 292 valid samples were obtained. Among the participants, 81 were biologically male, 210 were biologically female, and 1 identified as another gender. There were 164 heterosexual participants and 128 participants identifying as LGB or other sexual orientations. The mean age of participants was 31.59 years (SD = 6.21), with a mean of 2.94 years of professional experience (SD = 3.74). Data analysis included descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlation, moderation analysis, and qualitative analysis.
The results revealed that counseling helping professionals in Taiwan generally hold a slightly positive implicit attitude toward LGB individuals (M = 0.19, SD = 0.45). In terms of sexual orientation counselor competency, the scores of the attitude dimension were generally higher (M = 6.64, SD = 0.62), while the scores of knowledge (M = 4.40, SD = 0.98) and skills (M = 4.09, SD = 1.30) are relatively lower. Additionally, the study found a significant correlation between sexual orientation and the number of LGB friends with sexuality implicit attitude. Furthermore, biological sex, sexual orientation, age, number of LGB friends, counseling experience with LGB clients, years of counseling practice experience, and experience participating in LGB-related training were significantly related to sexual orientation counselor competency.
These findings suggest that, compared to knowledge and skills, both explicit and implicit attitude toward LGB individuals among participants are less likely to change significantly due to differences in professional training and years of counseling practice experience, highlighting the relative stability of individual attitudes. On the other hand, the results also reflect the long-term lack of training resources related to LGB and multicultural issues in the professional development of counseling helping professionals in Taiwan.
Finally, based on the research results and the limitations, the researcher provides specific recommendations for counseling practitioners, educators, and future researchers.
