《窈窕淑女》(My Fair Lady)改編自蕭伯納(George Bernard Shaw，Irland，1856~1950)的原著戲劇文本《賣花女》，其原名為《皮格馬利翁》(〝Pygmalion〞)；皮格馬利翁是羅馬詩人奧維德(Publius Ovidius Naso，西元前43年)作品《變形記》(Metamorphoseon )中一個雕刻家的角色，敘述他愛上雕像後，請求女神維納斯將其變為真人；而蕭伯納借用這個變型之後而具有自主權的女人作為原型，延伸成為劇本當中賣花女伊萊莎一角。當時時代背景下的英國，充斥著不平等的階級制度，而在這樣的社會環境之下，伊萊莎由一個賣花女蛻變成為足以參加大使館舞會的貴族人士，該角色的內在以及外表，都因為這樣的風氣而有所改變。
筆者初次欣賞此音樂劇時，相當喜歡這一個角色在舞台上展現的不同面貌，從粗俗的賣花女到氣質出眾的女爵，但只看到表面上伊萊莎的言行舉止以及外表的改變及不同，實際上並未真正了解是甚麼樣的潛在因素促使她有這樣的轉變。因此欲藉由研究來探索具體的因素及其轉變過程，讓表演者能夠掌握重點，演出時更為貼切。此研究探討當時英國的時代背景、角色分析及塑造，再藉由八首曲目《Why can’t The English?》、《Wouldn’t It Be Loverly》、《Just You Wait》、《The Rain In Spain》、《I Could Have Danced All Night》、《On The Street Where You Live》、《Show Me》、《Without You》來具體表達伊萊莎的轉變過程，以及與其他角色間的關係及互動。

My fair lady is adapted from the play by George Bernard Shaw, Pygmalion. Pygmalion is a sculptor in Metamorphoseon, which is a work of a Roman poet, Publius Ovidius Naso. It depicts that the sculptor fell in love with his sculpture and prayed to Venus for changing his sculpture into a real woman. George Bernard Shaw took the woman as a prototype, which was developed to the role, Eliza. In an era of hierarchy, Eliza was transformed from a flower girl to a duchess who can attend an embassy ball, and the inner and outer of the role was changed to fit in with the society.
When seeing the musical the first time, the author really enjoyed the different aspects of the role. She was transformed from a barbarous flower girl to an elegant duchess. However, the author only observed the differences of Eliza’s appearance, style of speech, and behavior.
The author didn’t truly understand the potential factors causing the change. Therefore, this paper aims at discussing the specific factors and the transforming process, so that the performers can master the key elements and appropriately interpret the role. The paper studies the social background of Britain at that time, role analyses and characterization. In addition, the paper illustrates the transformation of Eliza and the interaction with other roles concretely through the eight songs, 〝Why can’t The English?〞,〝 Wouldn’t It Be Loverly〞,〝 Just You Wait〞, 〝The Rain In Spain〞,〝 On The Street Where You Live〞,〝 I Could Have Danced All Night〞,〝 Show Me〞, and 〝Without You〞.
