1965年，伴隨美國移民法案之通過，促成新一波華人移民的興起，這批新移民擁有較高的教育水平、經濟資本以及專業技術背景，不同於傳統華埠的移民發展，呈現出多元融合的型態，成為近代美國華人移民研究的主要範疇，但遠在太平洋群島上之屬地「關島」，相較於相關移民研究的蓬勃發展卻尚未能獲得完整的照應。
關島華人移民至今僅為幾十年歷史，但其發展於移居國當地經濟與社會卻佔有相當影響，本研究主要以關島的華人移民社群團體與移民個別訪談為研究主體。探討自1970-2000年間，由華人移民心路歷程的開展，推演至其社團與經濟發展與在地社會的關係，現況及未來前景。
第一部分，首探關島臺灣僑民的遷移因素與過程，剖析其遷移後在心理層面及環境所產生之困境面對與克服，側重個別移民對於相異文化的衝擊與調適，以及不同世代間對於認同意識的轉變，對於未來的規劃與回流意願之考量。第二部份，詳述關島臺灣僑民之社會與經濟建構與發展。探討當地華產業於旅館業、零售業與國際貿易等發展情況，並介紹重要的華人經濟性社團，於後針對關島僑民的社會性社團之組織與發展探究，並以中華學校、華文傳媒、華人宗教組織等發展，反映當地華人與社會的結合交流與遠景。
