The purpose of this essay is to explore the experiences of career transition and career calling among counselors who once science-majored, with the aim of understanding the processes of career transition and career calling, as well as the influence of Chinese culture on these phenomena. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with four counselors who once science-majored and experienced a career calling. The interviews were analyzed using the narrative analysis methods of "holistic-content" and "categorical-content."
The analysis revealed that the development of career callings among the four participants showed patterns such as: "Signs of career calling evident in childhood," experiencing "internal awareness and external exploration," "the impact and doubt of the calling, the need to maintain it," and "the multifaceted nature of the calling." The study also found that participants embarked on their paths influenced by societal values and parental expectations, undergoing processes of "discovering their passion and meaning" and "unbinding from mainstream societal values or parental expectations." Factors contributing to this unbinding included "support from significant others," "accommodation to expectations," "opinions by accomplished person in the field," "opinions by accomplished person in the field," "age," and "infusion of new ideas through reading and participating in activities."
Additionally, despite differences in their paths, the career transitions of the four participants shared similar patterns, such as the "serendipitous use of opportunities," and connections with "influence of role models," "environmental factors," "mindsets and attitudes fostered by scientific and engineering training," and a mindset and attitude of 'accepting fate.' The study also highlighted the influence of Chinese cultural elements like "the pursuit of fame," "parental expectations for their children," "the doctrine of the mean," "beliefs within Chinese culture," and "the search for existential meaning" on career transitions and callings.
Finally, based on the research findings, the researcher provides relevant suggestions for those wishing to transition from science majors to pursue a calling, as well as for future researchers.
