“時間”因素是地理學研究中一個重要的影響關鍵，但是牽涉到時間問題的製圖討論不多，因此本文針對這個主題，探討在地圖中呈現時間的方式。
本文內容首先從關於“時間”這個問題開始討論，對於時間問題的討論最早可以追溯至古希臘哲人的研究，而到科學時代，牛頓的絕對時間觀點成為當代主流，這也是最能被一般人接受的時間思考方式。
而從地理學中關於時間文獻的收集與整理中得知，其實，各地理學者普遍接受牛頓的絕對時間思考方式，但除此之外，在地理學的研究中，時間可以有不同的功用，這些功用分別為順序關係、變數關係，以及因果關係；另外，還可以根據地理研究中現象變化的方向區分成“非週期性變化”以及”週期性變化”兩種；而地理中研究時間與空間距離時，認定時間可以當成是空間距離的一個量度方法。由此根據製圖時的位置觀點以及物件觀點，以及物件在空間中“移動”或“擴散”情形，將地理學中的時間研究概念區分成以下幾類：

本文接下來的內容則進入在地圖中呈現時間的方式探討，結果發現在地圖中呈現時間的方式包含有：並置一系列各時刻的地圖、在單張地圖中標示時間註記或利用變化圖例，以及利用動畫。另外，地圖中有一些常用符號可以清楚地表現時間上的意義，這三個符號是適用於表現時間數量改變的分區統計圖、表現現象移動的流線，以及處理時間距離問題時最常被用到的等時線。
有關各種時間研究與可能表現方法相結合的問題則是接下來討論之重點，在其中探討各種類時間研究問題中，“時間”如何被呈現的問題。另外，呈現時間的方法中並置一系列地圖時牽涉到版面配置的問題，以及在單張地圖如何變化圖例以呈現時間先後次序，將附加討論。
最後則建立各類時間研究地圖的符號參考表作為結論。
