The aim of this study was to explore the experiences related to perceived family strengths among stepchildren, including the development of family strengths and the content of family strengths within stepfamilies. The research adopts a narrative research orientation and uses semi-structured in-depth interviews to collect data from three stepchildren who believe their family possesses family strengths. Data analysis was conducted through holistic-content and categorical-content methods.
The results of the study were as follows. Frist, the development of family strengths in stepfamilies came from the following aspects: (1) being prepared for the new family, (2) establishing stable stepparent-child relationships, (3) creating an autonomous and safe growth environment, (4) forming connections among stepsiblings, (5) maintaining a stable partner relationship, and (6) managing and maintaining family relationships. Second, the content of stepfamily strengths was: (1) family support and connection, (2) openness, freedom, and respect, (3) harmonious shared time, and (4) new experiences and resources.
At the end of the study, based on the research results, the researcher provided suggestions for stepfamily members, practitioners, and future research.
