  • 美國女性藝術家愛莉絲.妮勒(Alice Neel)的藝術表現以人像畫見長,她所描繪的人物對象因時代遞嬗而有所變化,這點也成為她藝術風格分期之關鍵。本研究之主要目的,是以愛莉絲.妮勒(Alice Neel, 1900-1984)的人像藝術為媒介,探討在受到女性主義體制肯定的前提下,其藝術的矛盾性和選擇表現藝術的執著。以妮勒的一生奮鬥歷程為主軸,以其創作的藝術風格為重點,探究女性性別經驗在藝術中的表現,和堅持傳統人物畫領域創作之原因。同時了解到體制外的女畫家積極進入體制時的掙扎與矛盾,此外亦說明藝術家與所屬藝術群體之間矛盾關係。另外,藉由其自身時代背景的關連探索,瞭解到抽象表現主義及普普大眾文化佔居主流藝術所形成的視覺品味,其中形成無形的疆界及意識型態,使的妮勒於美國40-60年代外於主流藝術情形,最後於諸多紛擾的歷史評價中找尋妮勒之正確位置,以彰顯妮勒藝術堅持之價值所在。亦藉由論述藝術品特質及藝術家奮鬥歷程,瞭解妮勒整個藝術脈絡形塑過程,及探求妮勒藝術風格與主流意識型態的差異,最後能延伸推演至整個更大格局,初探藝術與大眾、高低文化之間及品味形塑出的階級關係。
    最後並做出這樣的結論﹔妮勒身為女性藝術家卻在被女性主義推崇奠定名聲之後,卻不願只是女性主義抗爭的典範,而企圖進入紐約藝術主流世界。為求她所要表現出的「時代精神」,使用最傳統的媒材-——油畫和體裁——人,藝術堅持的原因不外是以一種傳統形式抗拒藝術與大眾文化的靠攏,或批判藝術專斷鎖定某階層的弔詭,跳脫藝術單一層級,並跨越了藝術品單一文化次領域之價值,同時亦凸顯了藝術品所接收品味大眾階級屬性,拒絕混淆高低審美價值觀的分際,更排除了藝術本身的複雜、文本之意含,真誠純粹地在生活中實踐藝術。
