這首海頓(Joseph Haydn,1732-1809)的《降E大調小號協奏曲》，是海頓晚期的作品，作曲的時間是1796年，這是他所做的最後一首協奏曲。這首曲子最主要是為了當時在維也納宮廷樂團中的小號家韋登格(Anton Weidinger,1766-1852)所做的。韋登格為當時只能吹奏泛音的小號加以改良，他將小號的管壁上開孔，並加上類似長笛的按鍵，這樣做的原因是為了使小號可以演奏出音階，甚至於半音階。韋登格的樂器改良一直引起音樂學者的討論，雖然這種加上按鍵的樂器會因為 構造不完美使得聲音不清楚，且無法演奏clarino演奏法，不過韋登格這樣的改良，為後來的活塞式小號(piston trimpet)以及轉閥式小號(rotary trumpet)提供了改良的方向。clarino演奏法是十七、八世紀時為了讓小號演奏音高的一種訓練，由於小號是泛音樂器，因此在第三個八度的泛音之後就可以演奏一組比較接近於音階的泛音群，所以有許多作曲家例如巴哈(J.S.Bach, 1685~1750)特別喜愛為小號在此音域上寫作。韋登格的改良小號除了讓海頓為他寫下這首降E調協奏曲外，同時也吸引了胡邁爾(Johann Nepomuk Hummel,1778-1837)也為他寫了降E大調小號協奏曲。不管是海頓還是胡邁爾的小號協奏曲，都成為現今許多比賽或音樂會上常見的曲目，這都要歸功於韋登格，儘管他的改良式小號最後仍被現今的樂器所取代，不過在整個小號發展史中，韋登格仍有他的價值存在。研究者透過海頓創作背景、樂器之發展、曲式架構的分析，比對不同演奏版本提出了分析。希望藉由本論文之探討，能更加了解海頓創作的背景與樂器之改格變化。
