The Study of Vocational High School Students' Attitude and Behavioral Intention toward the Elderly
A Master Thesis By Chiung-Yu Chen
    Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the attitude and behavioral intention of students of one vocational high school in Taipei toward the elderly with analysis of the influencing factors. The population included students 7005 from first grade to third grade enrolled in one vocational high school in Taipei in 2002. The survey applied stratified cluster sampling method and was conducted from October to December 2002. Structured questionnaires were distributed to all the samples with 967 effective returned responses. The data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis, and Pearson correlation. The main results were as follows:
    1. Overall, subjects have a positive attitude toward the elderly. There was a positive attitude toward family living, social value, interpersonal relationship, and personal characteristics. There was a negative attitude toward the physiological characteristics.
    2. Subjects had positive behavioral intention toward the elderly.
    3. The demographic factors such as subjects' gender, department, birthplace, religion influenced the attitude toward the elderly. The interaction experience with the elderly time to get along and care for the elderly also influenced the attitude.
    4. The demographic factors such as subjects' birthplace, religion influenced the behavioral intention toward the elderly. The interaction experience with the elderly time to live, get along and care for the elderly also influenced the behavioral intention.
    5. There is a significant positive relation(p<0.05)between the attitude toward the elderly and the behavioral intention. The students who have more positive attitude have more positive behavioral intention toward the elderly.
According to the result of this study, it is recommended that school emphasized the education of students toward the elderly. School should help students have more interactions with the elderly and have respect toward the elderly. In the future study, educational intervention and local research tools could be developed.
