The purpose of this study is to explore the associations between fear of missing out, personality traits, self-esteem, and the risk of Instagram addiction among undergraduate students in Taiwan. The design of the research is a cross-sectional study. The self-administered online questionnaires included the Fear of Missing Out Scale, the short version of the Big Five Personality Scale, the Self-Esteem Scale, the Instagram Addiction Scale (TIAS), and the Basic Information Questionnaire. A total of 292 valid questionnaires were obtained. The results of the study showed a significant positive correlation (β = 0.39, p < 0.01) between the participants’ fear of missing out scores and Instagram addiction scores. Second, there was a significant negative correlation between participants’ self-esteem and Instagram addiction scores (β = -0.11, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the average daily use time of Instagram of the research subjects is also significantly correlated with the Instagram addiction score, and the average Instagram addiction score of those who used Instagram for 1-3 hours a day was higher than that of those who used < 1 hour (β= 0.22, p < 0.01), while those who used Instagram≧3 hours per day had a higher average Instagram addiction score than those who used Instagram < 1 hour per day (β= 0.35, p < 0.01). Women reported lower average Instagram addiction scores than men (β= -0.17, p < 0.01), while personality traits were not correlated with the score of Instagram addiction scale. The results of this study can be applied to enhance undergraduate students' awareness of Instagram addiction risks and improve their mental health.
