Abstract
Ten depressed patients participated in this study. Five were assigned to a exercise treatment condition which takes a 60~80% Heart-rate-maximum exercise intensity for one month, the others were participated in a non-exercise condition . Depression degrees of subjects were assessed before and after one-month exercise-treatment period in order to be compared with the effect on depression. Besides this, the study was also to probe into some factors which could improve the level of depression degree, such as exercise hobby, walking speed, exercise intensity, and exercise times.
Depression degree, between exercise-treatment condition and non-exercise condition before and after one month, was assessed with Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). And it was compared the vibrations of N100, P200, P300 latency (LA) and P300 related-amplitude (RA) from Event-related-potential (ERP) by auditory stimuli with the improvement of depression degree.
The results indicated that subjects in the walking exercise condition evidenced reliably greater improvements on depression degree than the non-exercise condition (both rating scales, p < .05) , this result divided that there is still a space to improve depression degree on medicated patients. On the other hand, among the related factors of decreased depression, there was only exercise-times concerned with the improvement of depression. ( both scales , p= .01;.04 )
On the exercise-treatment condition, there was no available confidence to provide the mean relationship between ERP and depression improvement (p > .05). This means that ERP is not sensitive enough to witness the improvement on depression for medicated patients.
