Internet has become an important field for communicating and building new relationships. People now are able to start new connection with others, such as making friends outside of your social circle or even to start a romantic relationship. As a result, Dating apps that use mobile phones as their platform have emerged and become a new communication medium in online communication. Dating app users switch communication platform from dating apps to social media by requesting other’s personal contact information. By doing this, study shows that the users’ gain intimacy with each other by doing so-called rituals of transition (Broeker, 2023). However, request is a face-threatening act, so it is necessary to employ different strategies to mitigate the threats. The speech act of request has been frequently studied, yet so far there are only a few Chinese studies regarding the request strategy in dating apps. Hence, the present study aims to analyzing how users request for others’ personal contact information as well as to identify Chinese speakers’ language traits while communicating in dating apps.
A data set of 240 requests from both discourse completion tests (DCT) and authentic data was collected. Based on the request frameworks of Blum-Kulka et al. (1989) and Hsieh (2015), the result showed that there are three head acts and eight supportive moves used in the context of requesting in dating apps. The research findings indicate that users of dating apps overall prefer query strategy to save others' face, while the least favored strategy is directive strategy. As for supportive moves, the most used ones are reason-explaining move and emoticon move. Regarding the gender differences in both DCT and authentic data, males used more directive strategy and reason-explaining move than females do. On the other hand, females’ preferences are query strategy and emoticon move.
Finally, this study designs a dating app requesting strategy lesson plan from the pragmatics teaching viewpoint, hoping to provide Chinese language teacher with more diverse teaching content as a reference for enhancing Chinese learners' communication skills.
