市面上的科普翻譯書越來越多，雖然背負著向社會大眾傳遞科普知識的使命，卻品質參差不齊，可能不但沒發揮科普書應有的功能，反而傳達給大眾錯誤的訊息。筆者並非科學專業出身，因為對科普書頗有興趣，加上朋友引薦，偶然接下了《珍稀地球》這本科普著作的翻譯工作，從翻譯、審查到出版，遭遇許多問題，本論文即是以這次經驗為基礎，探討當前科普翻譯的問題與解決之道：第一章介紹研究背景、動機以及論文的架構；第二章介紹原著的內容和兩位作者；第三章則整理過去許多人對科普翻譯的看法，討論翻譯科普書常見的問題和會遇到的困難，而要改善整體科普翻譯書的品質，必須譯者、編輯、審稿者和讀者都盡一份心力；在第四章中，筆者剖析在翻譯《珍稀地球》時，筆者面臨的最大問題是專業知識不足，包括名詞和科學概念，並說明了筆者採取的對策，另外也整理了訪談編輯所得到的資訊，描述編輯在處理這本書時曾有的抉擇和因應方式；第五章探討《珍稀地球》出書過程中譯者與編輯的合作，希望未來翻譯科普書時，譯者與編輯能採取以下合作模式──譯者交初稿→編輯挑出語句不通順處，外編審定錯誤→譯者定稿，並舉例證明這種模式的好處；最後一章則為結語，總結全文並闡述譯者翻譯的心得。

There are more and more translated popular science books on the market. Although they carry a mission of conveying popular science knowledge to the public, their translative quality is sometimes questionable, and thus instead of providing people with correct and interesting popular science knowledge, they might pass on wrong information to the public. I am not a scientific professional. The reason why I cooperated with Owl Publishing House Company to translate Rare Earth was because I was very much interested in this topic. During the process of translation, editing and proofreading by editors and proofreaders, to its publication, I faced many problems. This thesis is to investigate current problems of translating popular science books and explore how to solve them based on my experience of translating Rare Earth. The first chapter explains my research background, motive, and the structure of the thesis. The second chapter gives a brief introduction to the author and the content of Rare Earth. In the third chapter, other people’s comments on translated popular science books and problems and difficulties of translating popular science books are compiled. Translators, editors, proofreaders, and readers need to cooperate to comprehensively improve the quality of translated popular science books. The fourth chapter states that my biggest problem encountered while translating Rare Earth is lack of professional knowledge and how I solved it. The decisions and measures adopted by the editor while handling the book are also discussed, based on the interview with the editor. The fifth chapter examines the interaction between the translators and the editor, and a cooperative model is proposed for translators and editors for dealing with popular science books—first translation→checks by editors→double checks by translators. Examples are provided to prove what effect this model can achieve. The last chapter is to sum up findings of the previous chapters.
