What kind of traveling experience permits travelers to fully indulge in the journey itself, unburdened by heavy luggage, fatigue, and the complications of accommodation? What kind of traveling experience allows people to wake up to a new city every morning when they open their eyes? Such are the benefits of cruising that set it apart from other types of travel, and thus its unique allure. In recent years,as Taiwanese people change their lifestyles and become more experienced in traveling abroad, travelers nowadays, while holding higher expectations for their holiday experience, also looking forward to a more relaxed and casual way of travel.
Consequently, overseas cruise holidays have gained increased popularity, as testified by experienced cruisers looking to expand their domestic cruise experience, as well as by first-time cruisers seeking an alternative overseas vacation.
Since every journey makes for its own compelling story, this study, prompted by an interest to shed light on the overseas cruise experience of Taiwanese tourists, aims at
studying their innermost experiences with European cruise holidays from the tourists' standpoint. Each of the personal odysseys will be closely examined in the following
aspects: the anticipation prior to the cruise, the onboard and onshore activities in the course of the journey, and the post-trip reflections upon returning. In order to
accurately depict the inner thoughts and variegated experiences of individual cruise travelers, this research employs a qualitative approach that, through in-depth
interviews and ongoing questioning, will assist interviewees in revisiting the contexts of their journey, in an attempt to reconstruct their perspectives on the significance of the cruise experience. Finally, data interpretation and analysis of relevant materials
will then be conducted to establish an overview of the European cruise experience of Taiwanese tourists.
Study has shown that while seeking to explore and add spice to life, cruise travelers prefer to travel in a laid-back and relaxed pace. In the course of the journey, the
highlights of cruising include assorted enjoyments of the senses, social interactions, and the opportunity to revert to a simple and natural state of being; yet people tend to
develop negative feelings when they experience a loss of control or in situations of disorder. As for the value of the European cruise experience perceived in people's
minds, the findings underline the enrichment of life experiences, the opportunity of creating memories with family members as well as that of learning a new attitude
towards life.
