  • 廿一世紀的今天,國際性的移動/移民是形塑全球化社會的主要趨力之一,而移民家庭於國際間移動也取決於個人、家庭受到全球化的拉力與推力。而本研究關注全球化移動的趨勢下,臺灣母親在新加坡跨文化母職教養的議題,欲瞭解臺灣母親在新加坡所遭遇的教養困境、因應教養困境之內、外在因應策略與所運用的內、外在資源等。
    本研究選擇六位在「跨文化適應量表」(Ryder, Alden & Paulhus, 2000)之得分表現為「整合型」(integration)的臺灣母親做為研究對象,以半結構化的訪談大綱,蒐集深度訪談資料,並敘事研究(Narrative Research)取向來分析質化的資料,本研究發現:(一)臺灣母親遭受的教養困境為面對語言及學校的適應壓力、「教」重於「養」的母職角色、憂心孩子的華語程度等;(二)臺灣母親面對教養困境時,向內為檢視教養信念,以孩子學習成就為優先考量、以一體兩面的觀點來接納文化差異,放大優勢、善用當地資榞,以正向眼光擴展困境的新意義;向外則學習當地父母提供孩子補習資源、提升自己的語文能力、積極擴展社交圈、增進親子關係的連結,並積極保留臺灣的好規範、傳承族群母語的華文優勢等;(三) 臺灣母親於跨文化母職教養之適應的歷程中,向內受到正向人格特質、過去相關經驗之影響,進而帶動其向外尋求學校資源、家庭系統、宗教信仰與社交網路的聯結,促成其邁向跨文化母職適應的整合之路。
    最後,根據本研究發現,進一步針對未來研究、臺灣移民新加坡家庭、諮商實務工作等層面,提出具體之建議。

    With the trend of globalization, international migration has become a major force in shaping the global society. To the immigrant families, they have to face a broad array of challenges, such as leaving behind highly valued friendships in the old country, learning a new language, trying to fit into a completely new socio cultural environment, adjusting to a new education system, and at times fighting discrimination, prejudice, and feelings of social isolation and so on. Especially for mothers, they not only made effort to conquer the acculturative stress themselves but also need to help their children to accommodate new environment. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the acculturation and parenting adjustment experience of Taiwanese mothers living in Singapore.
    “Vancouver Index of Acculturation, VIA” questionnaire (Ryder, Alden & Paulhus,2000) was used to select six Taiwanese mothers in Singapore who has adopted “integration” acculturation strategy to participate in the current study. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with the six subjects. The Narrative Research Method was used to analyze the data. The study found: (1) The major challenges for these Taiwanese mothers were the language barrier, adjustment to the new school system in the host country, serving the roles as both “tutor” and “nurturer” to help their children, worries about children’s Chinese language progress, etc.; (2) In dealing with the challenges, these Taiwanese mothers sought inner strength through their belief in their own abilities to nurture and educate, put their children’s education first, accepted the cultural differences, made use of outside resources, gave meanings to the challenges, learned from the native parents in seeking extra tutoring resources for their children, improved their own language proficiencies, expanded their social circles, enhanced “Parent-child” connection and bonding, actively preserved the exemplary customs from Taiwan, recognized the importance and advantage of knowing Chinese language, etc.; (3) These Taiwanese mothers were able to achieve integration in their cross-cultural parenting adjustment due to their positive personality traits and past relevant experiences that helped them further seek external resources in schools, family systems, faith organizations, and social networks.
    Based on the current research findings, suggestions for future research on Taiwanese families in Singapore were discussed. Practical implications on counseling and improving the acculturation and parenting suggestions for Taiwanese mothers were also described.
