本論文旨在探討《O孃的故事》(Story of O) 和其續集《重返城堡》(Return to the Chateau) 中的女性受虐情結(female masochism)和女女之間的施虐與受虐的另類情慾交歡(lesbian S/M)。
This thesis aims to explore the representations of female masochism in Story of O and its sequel—Return to the Chateau. A historical survey of the term “female masochism” reveals that early psychiatrists, such as Richard von Krafft-Ebing, Sigmund Freud, and Helene Deutsch, define masochism as a “naturally” feminine quality and assert that masochism is a “natural” trait of women. In contrast, modern psychoanalysts like Karen Horney, Paula J. Caplan and Jessica Benjamin expose the oppressive and socially-constructed nature of female masochism. They all argue that women are essentially trapped within familial and social structures, which enforce and perpetuate female masochism. Beyond the essential/social-construct binary, Gilles Deleuze and modern lesbian s/m theorists provide a different angle to see masochism. They empower the masochist and see sadomasochism as a role-playing game.
