二十世紀初，美國學校體育做了一項成功的改革，其特色就是將sports和games導入學校體育，並且隨著體育和當時新式教育理論的結合，使得原本由德式、瑞典體操所構成的學校體育，開始產生了突破性的變化，也就是以競技運動來做為體育教學課程的主體。
根據筆者研究，對其提出以下幾點論述：
一、新體育理論的形成，乃是在時代背景的迫使下促成，受到新式教育理論的影響，使得作為學校教育之一環的體育必須有所改革。在新式教育的理念中，又以自然主義教育和實用主義教育哲學最具代表性。
二、新體育創始者包括古立克、伍德、赫斯林頓和威廉姆斯，他們認為體育課程應該擺脫人造的、形式的體操活動，體育課程應包含遊戲活動、競技運動和舞蹈。這使得原本以德式和瑞典體操為主的體育課程，轉變為以遊戲活動和競技運動為主的體育課程，稱之為「新體育」。
三、新體育理論借用科學的角度，建構出一套完整的系統，包含了教育學、心理學、生物學、生理學和社會學的理論基礎。生物學和生理學重視個人內在的生長和發育，教育學、心理學和社會學則重視個人外在行為的培養，其目的乃是要培育一個完整健全的個人。
四、綜觀以上所述，新體育理論之成效可由學校體育教學方式的轉變、校園運動風氣的盛行、以及學校環境與體育設施的整備觀之。因此，學校體育蓬勃的發展，造就了美國成為競技運動競技運動王國的美譽，也使其成為奧林匹克運動會的常勝國。

In the origin of the twentieth century , American school physical education made a successful change. Its feature was that games and sports were used in school physical education. By combining with the New Education Theory , the Deutsches Turnen and Swedish Gymnastics had a great change. Sports and games became the main roles in the physical education programs.
Based on the writer's study , the following conclusions are presented :
Ⅰ.The forming of the New Physical Education Theory was influenced by New Education Theory. It made school physical education change. In New Education Theory ideas, Naturalism and Experimentalism were characteristic.
Ⅱ.The founders of New Physical Education Theory were Gulick , Wood , Hetherington , and Williams. They thought physical education programs should give up the artificial and formal Gymnastics. The school physical education programs should include games , sports ,and dancing. This made the Deutsches Turnen and Swedish Gymnastics change , and the sports and games became the main programs , called ” New Physical Education”.
Ⅲ.New Physical Education Theory based on science , and founded a complete system. It included Education Theory , Psychology , Biology , Physiology , and Sociology. Biology and Physiology stressed the importance of the inner growth of individuals. Education Theory , Psychology and Sociology made the outer behavior of individuals important. Its aim was to cultivate a healthy and complete person.
Ⅳ.In conclusion , the effects of New Physical Education Theory could be seen by the change of the method of teaching physical education , sports in campus , and change in the environment of school physical education equipment. So the plenty flourish made the United States the King of Sports. It was usually the winner in the Olympic Games.
