Bitumen is widely used for road pavement and roofing. However, bitumen and its fume may contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives. Some of them are known to be carcinogenic or co-carcinogenic in animals. Our study is to develop and establish an effective method for detecting and quantifying 24 major PAHs (16 PAHs and 8 methyl-substituted PAHs) in bitumen.
Due to strong matrix effects, the pretreatment steps are crucial for the success of analytical processes. We used GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography ) to clean up the bitumen samples and determined the content of PAH in the treated samples by GC-MS under ion selective mode after a pre-concentration step. The average recoveries, except for naphthalene, are in the range of 72.3 % to 108.9 % . The method detection limits are from 0.441 µg/g to 1.346 µg/g.
According to our experimental results, a method of analyzing PAHs in bitumen was developed with satisfactory recoveries. This method also shares the potential to be used for other types of environmental samples. It was used to analyze several types of cooking oil that contain PAH. Results also show satisfactory recoveries.
