Toshio Hosokawa (1955-) is one of the most famous international composers from Japan today and his pieces are frequently performed around the world. When he was young, he lived in the suburbs of Hiroshima, where brings up the perceptiveness of sound from the natural environment. His deep concern for Japanese culture, traditional art and religion over a long period of time influences his music, and makes his works represent a strong Japanese Zen philosophy.
The thesis mainly discusses Hosokawa’s orchestra — Woven Dreams (2010). Through analyzing the background of creation, form, instrumentation, voice leading and texture, studying Hosokawa’s writings about music and Japanese philosophy, the thesis aims to explore his music imagery. Finally, the researcher analyses her own composition and explains how Hosokawa influenced her music idea.
