    Abstract
    D. H. Lawrence writings remained controversial throughout his career; they are still so today. However, his rendering of life, love and human relationships has provoked much comment due to the intensity of its emotion and sexual openness. His works are very explorative and interrogative. He attempts in a most fascinating manner to experience life to its full, and is consistent in a philosophy which allows for various perspectives.
Women in Love, which Lawrence himself considered his best, has elicited more criticism than anything else he wrote. It is the story of the lives and emotional conflicts of two sisters. Gudrun and Ursula, who appeared in the former work The Rainbow, live in a Midlands colliery town. Ursula falls in love with Birkin, a school inspector, and Gudrun has a tragic affair with Gerald, the son of the local colliery owner. These four clash in thought, passion and belief, and the reader is gripped by deeply held by Lawrence’s convictions about love, human relationship and modern society. As all four characters search for a fuller life, their relationships shift and change; and violence is never far below the surface.
Women in Love contains the quintessence of Lawrence’s message. The goal of human life should be to come into an understanding of one’s being and blood, as Lawrence tells us to open ourselves freely to the influx of life. The integral self must be kept whole and distinct, and even to some degree, separate, as Birkin’s two stars are separate. To get redemption in spontaneous individuality, one should achieve a balance between blood-consciousness and mental consciousness.
In my thesis there are five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to Lawrence, the writer, and Women in Love. From the second chapter on, I deal with the man-woman relationships. And then friendships and relationships among female characters and male characters. When Lawrence talks of a relationship, he talks in terms of a committed, one-to-one, intense, creative partnership akin to the marriage relationship. The overall conclusion is stated in the last chapter. From somewhat social psychologist point of view, I closely study the interpersonal communication and relationships of the characters. Birkin and Ursula choose life and commit themselves to their quest for an integral being, whereas Gerald and Gudrun fail in their quest for a coherent self and harmonious life. In the relationship charts, the fluctuating lines indicate how the characters quest for a possible fulfillment.
