The purpose of this study is to investigate two of the most
common code-switching phenomena in Taiwan: Mandarin/Taiwanese
and Mandarin/English code-switching. Data are collected from
formal and informal discourses, and are analyzed from
syntactic, semantic and functional perspectives. Through the
analysis of syntactic categories, it is found that the
distributive frequencies of different syntactic categories are
proportionally the same as those found in previous studies. On
the basis of the Matrix Language Frame model, four principles
are set up to account for the syntactic constraints. It is
found that matrix language plays a dominant role in code-
switching. The matrix language sets the morphosyntactic frame
and directs most code-switching. Eight semantic categories and
twelve communicative functions of code-switching are examined
to depict the causes and motivations for code-switching. In the
semantic categories, most switched items belong to common
expressions and common core expressions. Taiwanese serves as a
low language whose switches often carry the functions of
solidarity, humorous or ironic effect, expressiveness, and
vulgarity. English is an important language, especially in
technological fields, and most of its switches convey the
communicative functions of referential function,
professionalism and ease of expression.
