This study explored college students’ experiences with online exposure to illicit drugs. The relationships between students’ background characteristics, online information exposure, drug risk perceptions, preventive attitudes, and intentions to use drugs were examined. Seven classes were selected from a private college in Taipei. A total of 337 college students completed the questionnaire survey.
The results showed that sixty-four percent of the participating students had been exposed to anti-drug information online. About half of the students had been exposed to illicit drug producing/selling online information. Forty-two percent of the participating students had been exposed to pro-drug online information. Multiple logistic regression analysis results showed that students who had ever been exposed to illicit drug producing/selling online information (OR = 4.55, 95% CI = 1.18-17.46), who had a low risk perception of using illicit drugs (OR = 0.07, 95% CI = 0.02-0.23), and a poor preventive attitude (OR = 0.28, 95% CI = 0.10-0.75) were more likely to use illicit drugs.
It is suggested that governments should monitor and block illicit drug information online. More anti-drug information should be displayed online to provide accurate illicit drug information.
