黑潮是北太平洋中最重要的西方邊界流,北赤道洋流由東向西流,遇到民答那峨島分支成南北兩股海流,向北的支流為黑潮,流經菲律賓東岸、呂宋海峽與台灣東部海岸。當黑潮流經台灣東北時,因遇到東西走向的東海陸棚,使得原本向北流動轉而向東流,大約沿著200公尺等深線流往日本東岸,黑潮在台灣東北部有季節性擺動的現象,在夏季時,容易向離岸(向東)方向擺動;在冬季時,容易向靠岸(向西)方向擺動,並進而入侵東海陸棚。本研究主要是利用1993年至2010年的衛星觀測資料來研究台灣東北部海流的時空變化,尤其是黑潮入侵東海陸棚的現象,我們定義經度121.67°E至122.5°E,緯度25.5°N至26.4°N之平均流速為黑潮入侵東海陸棚的指標 (Kuroshio Intrusion index, K. I. 指標),結果發現在年際變化上K. I. 指標與氣候指標(如ENSO、PDO和PTO等)有顯著的相關性,在1997/98年與2002/03年的冬季,當PDO與ENSO皆呈正向時,入侵量有明顯減少的現象。進一步分析,在1997/98年的冬季,是受到熱通量梯度的改變所影響。2002/03年的冬季則是受到由東向西傳的中尺度渦漩靠近黑潮所影響,反氣旋渦漩容易造成黑潮向東蜿蜒,使得入侵量減少。
