    • 在台灣社會與歷史中，雜貨店扮演著重要的角色，不僅為民眾提供日常生活用品、 食物等雜貨，更是一個社區共聚交流的地方，而雜貨店也是台灣在地文化的象徵。雜 貨店曾是許多台灣村落不可或缺的一部分，然而時至今日，隨著連鎖便利商店的興 起，傳統的雜貨店漸漸的沒入歷史中。《老雜時代》一書中，記錄著作者林欣誼與攝影 師曾國祥一同到訪台灣各地傳統雜貨店的故事，同時《老雜時代》也是台灣第一本以 傳統雜貨店為主題的書。書中所記錄的點點滴滴帶領讀者走進台灣的雜貨店，透過店 家的日常生活與傳承故事，一窺台灣的歷史與文化。本英文譯註包括《老雜時代》的 前半部，筆者希望藉由英文譯文及註解，讓英文讀者群能夠更加了解台灣這段獨特的 歷史。

    General stores, or zahuodian 雜貨店, have played an important role in Taiwan’s society. These stores are not just places that supply daily necessities and groceries but represent the heart of a community, serving as a gathering place and symbol of local culture. General stores were once a vital part of communities in Taiwan. Today, big chain convenience stores have grown in number and popularity, while neighborhood general stores are fading into history. Taiwan’s Old General Stores: Stories Revived (老雜時代), by author Lin Hsin-Yi and photographer Tseng Kuo-Hsiang, captures and preserves the stories of longstanding general stores around Taiwan. It is the first book of its kind to be published in Taiwan. The book shows glimpses into the lives of store owners with deep roots in Taiwan, touching on Taiwan’s history of governance, religion, and daily life. This annotated translation includes the first half of Taiwan’s Old General Stores: Stories Revived, aiming to make this unique part of Taiwan’s society accessible to English readers while ensuring readers have enough context to understand the book's content and experience this part of Taiwan’s history.
