The purposes of this study were to examine the effects of goal orientation and perceived competence on rating of perceived exertion (RPE), exercise performance, and on predicting maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) from 1.5 mile and 12-min walk-run tests. Subjects were 44 healthy male college students (mean age=20.48±1.53 yr). Based on subjects' goal orientation and perceived competence, they were categorized into four groups:1)high task/low ego and high perceived competence group;2) high task/low ego and low perceived competence group;3)high ego/low task and high perceived competence group;4)high ego/low task and low perceived competence group. During the experiment, each subject performed one Bruce treadmill VO2max test, one 12 min walk-run test and 1.5mile walk-run test. The RPE was recorded immediately after 12 min and 1.5 mile walk-run tests. The results indicated that high perceived competence group had lower RPE than low perceived competence group and 12 min walk-run test resulted lower RPE than 1.5 mile walk-run test. Results also revealed that high perceived competence group performed better than low perceived competence group on 12 min and 1.5 mile walk-run tests. Finally, no significant difference was found between relationships of 12 min and 1.5 mile walk-run performance with VO2max.
