The purpose of this study was to develop an electronic programming textbook system with comprehension-improving features. Our design took advantage of the dynamic nature of electronic media by highlighting the relationship between textual description and the target it describes, resulting in better congruence of text, graphical illustrations, and program code in the learning material. A modified randomized-groups pretest-posttest design was used to investigate the effect of the use of our electronic textbook system on learners’ comprehension of pointers in C programming. Reading behavior of students in the experimental group was also recorded on the observation sheet during the experiment. This was followed by a group interview to collect the participants’ opinions about the design features. Results revealed that our electronic textbook system was effective in facilitating comprehension for higher and medium achievement group of participants. In addition, students in the experimental group found the reading-aid features helpful in enhancing their understanding of the material, in motivating learning and enabling faster reading speed at the same time. They also suggested that our electronic textbook was appropriate for after-class reviews.
