Modesty plays an important role in self-mental health and interpersonal relationships. Many researchers have discussed the benefits of modesty on mental health in the past, but some scholars hold different arguments and believe that modesty also has bad side effects. This study attempts to clarify the impact of modesty on individual mental health as positive or negative, and the path of modesty affecting mental health. Therefore, it may influence the potential factors of modest-subjective well-being path into the study. For a dispositional construct that contains both personality and behavior, and the self-defeating humor style is a concrete behavior, the researchers want to explore whether self- defeating humor affects the modest-subjective happiness path. This study uses modesty response scale (MRS) ,traditional Chinese version of the Humor Style Questionnaire (HSQ-TC) , satisfaction with life scale and PANAS scales. 512 students from 5 colleges were included in this study. The results shows there is a significant positive correlation between modesty and self-defeating humor style, negative correlation between modesty and subjective well-being, negative correlation between self-defeating humor style and subjective well-being.College students’ self-defeating humor style mediated the relation between modesty and satisfaction with life,self-defeating humor style mediated the relation between modesty and negative emotion. Finally, according to the results of this study are discussed, some suggestions are proposed for future research and educational counseling.
