This study investigates the polysemous senses of bao in Taiwanese Mandarin by conducting a comprehensive analysis of its various usages. Huang (2008) examined the diachronic semantic change of bao, followed by a discussion of the usages of bao in Modern Mandarin. Huang mentioned that metaphorical change was a mechanism for the meaning change of bao, but he did not delve deeper to explore the role that metaphorical change plays in the semantic extension of bao. In addition, Huang did not include all the novel meanings of bao, especially the novel meanings of bao over the past decade. To make up for the inadequacies of previous research, this study conducts a more thorough investigation of the polysemous senses of bao in Taiwanese Mandarin and discusses how metaphor and image schema are involved in the meaning extension of bao.
This study uses authentic data collected from popular online forums in Taiwan and employs Johnson’s (1987) image schemata, particularly the Containment schema and the Force schema, along with their related metaphors, to effectively explain the polysemous senses of bao in Taiwanese Mandarin. Moreover, this study finds several novel meanings or usages of bao that haven’t been discussed before, such as the meaning of “to spoil the plot”, “rapidly and extensively”, “engaging in activities without any limitations or restraints”, and “broken”.
By conducting an in-depth investigation involving authentic data, it is anticipated that this study will provide a better understanding of the various polysemous senses and usages of bao in Taiwanese Mandarin.
