This thesis argues that no movement is involved in the so-
called Chinese passive construction, the bei-construction, in
contrast to English passives. Based on the evidence showing
that the bei-construction exhibits neither the passive morpheme
nor theta role absorption or Case absorption, a non-movement

gives a straightforward account for cases involving long-
distance passivization, which cannot be accommodated under an
NP-movement account nor a wh-movement account of the bei-
construction.
