The purpose of this study was to explore the developmental process of lesbian identity, the significant factors associated with lesbian identity development, and the social-cultural context.
In this study, a qualitative research method was adopted to in depth interview two young women (aged 18-24) who identified themselves as lesbians. The result was analyzed by the narrative analysis method. The main findings were as follows.
In the current society, heterosexuals are the major population, while the two women in this study experienced the awareness of homosexual feelings and desire, Yet because their internalized homophobia as well as social stigma, they repressed their homosexual feelings and desire. After puberty, their homosexual feelings and desire became so intensive that they couldn't repress it. They learned and grew from their facing and resolving the conflicts between inner erotic feelings and external stress. Their lesbian identity became more steady ultimately. In the process of their lesbian identity development, the major sources of stress were their internalized homophobia, their heterosexual assumption, and the homophobia reflected from their peers, families, and the media. Coming out might make them experience support or conflict. When their homosexual orientation were discovered without their permission, they got hurt. Both cases in this study reported that the two lesbians became more comfortable about themselves and their lives than before when their lesbian identity became more steady.
Based upon the above-mentioned results, discussions and suggestions were presented.
