This case study examines Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) and its translation of news stories for its English website, Focus Taiwan, during the final two weeks of the 2024 Taiwanese election (January 1-14, 2024). Following Roberto Valdeón’s approach of using concepts such as gatekeeping and framing to assess journalistic translation, this product-oriented study examines a portion of CNA’s election coverage in Chinese and English for elements of selection/deselection and shifts in framing through translation. The 2024 presidential election serves as a framework for viewing a wide range of topics from election interference to candidates’ positions on the death penalty. CNA, as Taiwan’s national news agency, strives to present Taiwan to the global community, a mission made even more crucial during a major election cycle. Through Focus Taiwan, CNA shaped the overarching story of the election in line with its mission. The agency largely drew from articles that its staff created for a local audience and transferred it to an international one through translation. In the process, CNA focused on major figures and issues while also adding or removing content to craft election news that could be intelligible and palatable to international readers.
