The main purposes of this study were to understand the relationship between coaches' burnout and leadership behavior in YMCA swimming classes. The subjects of this study were 104 coaches in YMCA swimming classes before May, 1998. The questionnaire of the relationship between the coaches' burnout and leadership behavior in YMCA swimming classes were distributed and analyzed. ANOVA and Scheffe analysis were used to analyze the data. Within the scope of this study, the following conclusions were:1. Most of the leadership behavior in YMCA swimming classes, was with "low consideration, high initiating structure" the lowest was, "high consideration, high initiating structure".2. Coaches' salary was the most serious problem of the YMCA swimming classes causing coaches' burnout.3. There were significant differences of coaches' burnout among the coaches' age, marriage status, job, educational major, work experience, and work place. However there were no significant differences of coaches' burnout among the coaches' sex, full or part time status, the class most often taught, educational background or salary.4. There were significant differences of leadership behavior among the different teaching problems, working pressure, the participation of strategy, the identification of the students and their parents, the salary problems, the surroundings and the equipment …etc in YMCA swimming classes on this study.5. The leadership behavior in YMCA swimming classes, with "low consideration, low initiating structure", and "low consideration, high initiating structure" causing coaches' higher burnout rate than the leadership behavior of leaders in YMCA swimming classes, with the "high consideration, highly initiating structure", or "high consideration, low initiating structure".
