This study aims to investigate university scholars' perceptions and attitudes towards open access journals. Currently, there is limited literature on how university faculty in Taiwan view open access journals and the related supports provided by academic libraries. Through this study, it is hoped to gain insights into the current considerations and needs of university faculty in terms of academic journal and open access journal publishing and utilization. This will enable us to effectively assess the appropriateness of library support for open access journal services.
The research methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative questionnaire surveys with qualitative semi-structured interviews. A questionnaire survey was distributed to the research participants, National Sun Yat-sen University faculty members. The survey distribution period was from May 1, 2023, to June 12, 2023, resulting in a total of 102 valid responses. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 7 faculty members from May 15, 2023, to May 31, 2023.
Based on the research findings, the following conclusions are proposed: 1. Scholars prioritize the quality or reputation of journals when publishing research outcomes; 2. Open access journals enhance research visibility, promote academic dissemination, and advance scientific research; 3. Scholars are increasing the proportion of research outcomes published in open access journals; 4. There is still a contradiction in scholars’ attitudes towards open access journals; 5. Authors' publication of open access journal articles may incur economic burdens due to article processing charges; 6. Libraries can promote knowledge about open access journals, organize submission consultation seminars, and provide predatory journal identification services, along with signing agreements with publishers for favorable article processing charge schemes for open access journal submissions; 7. In an era of coexistence between traditional and open access journals, libraries should continue to acquire high-quality journals, monitor whether their journal collections are transitioning to open access, and adjust reader services as needed.
Based on the research findings, the following research suggestions are proposed: 1. University scholars and libraries should collaborate to communicate and exchange information on open access and related issues; 2. University libraries should actively promote information about open access journals, curate lists of high-quality open access journals in various subject areas, and make them easily accessible for readers' research purposes; 3. Funding agencies or research institutions should establish standards or policies for open access journals.
