Collaboration with external partners has emerged as a highly promising approach for businesses seeking to enhance their innovation performance. Based on a sample of Taiwanese family-owned businesses in electronics industry, this study aims to investigate the impact of collaboration with external partners on the innovation performance of family firms.
As the business environment becomes increasingly complex, the significance of cooperation, idea exchange, and resource sharing between various entities, including both industry and academia, has grown significantly. The relationship between family businesses and collaboration with external partners in terms of innovation is particularly noteworthy. Due to their unique characteristics, family firms may face specific challenges in accessing and utilizing external knowledge. Moreover, the involvement of family members in the management and governance of the enterprise can also significantly influence the willingness, process, and outcomes of collaboration. It is important to note that these factors do not operate in isolation, but rather interact and influence each other in various ways. This complexity adds depth and richness to the study of collaborative innovation within the context of family businesses, making it an important and highly promising area of research, as exploring how the above-mentioned factors impact collaborative innovation strategies and results holds the potential to shape the future trajectory of family businesses, empowering them to excel and flourish in competitive markets.
The research identifies common challenges faced by family firms adopting collaborative innovation approach, discusses factors that contribute to or hamper the success of collaborative innovation in family firms and provide insights into potential opportunities of collaboration with external partners.
