Previous research has found fast speech rates lead to greater interpreting challenges, often resulting in deteriorated performance and increased stress. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impacts of incorporating fast speech rate materials during conference preparation on the performance of student interpreters. A mixed-methods approach is adopted to assess the effectiveness of speed preparation in handling fast speakers.
Twelve student interpreters were randomly divided into two groups. The experimental group prepared with speech rates faster than the final interpreting task, while the control group prepared with speech rates matching the final task. Retrospective interviews were conducted after each task to explore participants’ strategies, perceptions of speech rate, and task difficulty to understand how they adapted to fast speech rates.
Quantitative results revealed that the experimental group demonstrated better performance in terms of accuracy and overall performance in the final task and that Group B’s performance between the preparation and final task was not significant. Qualitative findings further showed that speed preparation also contributed to greater perception and strategic changes for the experimental group, facilitating participants' adaptation to the final task. These results underscore the potential benefits of incorporating speed preparation into conference preparation routines.
