The use of tobacco products is one of the public threats we are facing around the world. Also, it causes major health problems only second to obesity. Smoking in adolescents will especially result in their health hazards and their physical and mental developments in the future. In recent years, new tobacco products roll out, and the rate of adolescents’ exposure to e-cigarettes is gradually rising. According to previous researches, the use of e-cigarettes may increase smoking intentions and behaviors. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the current situation of teenagers’ use of e-cigarettes and the association of e-cigarettes use with smoking intentions and smoking behaviors among adolescents.
This study takes the seventh-grade students from junior high schools in five metropolitan areas of New Taipei City as the research objects. In June 2020, a questionnaire survey was carried out, and a total of 560 valid samples were obtained. The data was analyzed by statistical methods, such as descriptive statistics, chi-square test, independent sample t-test, and binary logistic regression.
The findings of the study are:
1. Adolescents who did not use e-cigarettes accounted for 95.36 percent, and those who used e-cigarettes accounted for 4.64 percent.
2. Adolescents’ use of e-cigarettes has significant statistical association with their smoking intentions.
3. Adolescents’ use of e-cigarettes has significant statistical association with their smoking behaviors.
4. Adolescents’ use of e-cigarettes and their household secondhand smoke exposure have significant statistical association with their smoking behaviors.
The findings of this study show that the adolescents’ use of e-cigarettes is significantly related to their smoking intentions and smoking behaviors. Yet, since this particular study is a cross-sectional study, it is recommended that a longitudinal study should be carried out in the future to further understand the causal relationship between the use of e-cigarettes and smoking intentions and smoking behaviors. In addition, the use of e-cigarettes and household secondhand smoke exposure are significantly related to smoking behaviors. Therefore, to reduce adolescents their use of e-cigarettes and smoking behaviors, courses on tobacco hazards prevention at school should involve parents to further encourage smoking family members to quit smoking and establish positive anti-smoking family norms.
