Time concept is very abstract, but it is important to our life and many subjects. The instructional strategy for teaching time concept is different from other units. The past research showed that elementary school students have difficulties in learning time unit conversion and calculation. So this study developed a game-based learning software for children’s time unit conversion and calculation based on the theory of time unit conversion and calculation, the design principles of game-based learning software and the teaching strategy of external representation. A quasi-experimental design was adopted to evaluate the effects of the proposed software on the fifth grade students’ abilities of time unit conversion and calculation. Questionnaires were conducted to collect information regarding students’ attitudes toward the game-based learning software. This study used ANOCVA to analyze data. The results showed that the effects of conventional instruction and game-based computer assisted instruction on the students’ abilities of time unit conversion and calculation have no significant difference. According to the results of the questionnaire, students like to use computer and the game-based learning software, but it is hard to promote students’ learning interests to mathematics relatively.
