Green tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) is one of the most useful metal chelates for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). By changing 5-position CH to N, aluminum chelates of 4-hydroxy-1,5-naphthyridine exhibit very deep blue fluorescence, wide band gap energy, high charge carrier mobility, and superior thermal stability. Using a vacuum-thermal-deposition process in the fabrication of OLEDs, we have successfully demonstrated that the application of these unusual hydroxynaphthyridine aluminum chelates can be very versatile and effective. Therefore, we synthesized and characterized a series of aluminum chelates with different 4-hydroxy-1,5-naphthyridine derivatives. They can be a highly efficient blue emitter as well as host material for efficient dopant-based blue or white OLEDs. They can be a host material for efficient blue perylene dopant (CIEx,y = 0.14, 0.25 and maximum ηext 2.4%). For solid state lighting application, they are desirable as a host material for yellow dopant (rubrene) in achieving high efficiency (ηext 4.8% and ηP 8.5 lm/W at an electroluminance of 100 cd/m2 or ηext 4.7% and ηP 6.9 lm/W at an electroluminance of 1000 cd/m2) white electroluminescence (CIEx,y = 0.34, 0.46) with mild efficiency roll-off.
