本論文旨在研究「思想」在庫爾培寫實主義(Courbetism)中所扮演的角色。尚．德西雷．居斯塔夫．庫爾培(Jean Desire Gustave Courbet，1819-1877)，評論家口中的「寫實主義之父」，一個行事與作品都令當時人坐立難安的畫家。庫爾培能在繪畫世界中走出一條和旁人迥然不同的道路，乃因其創作過程中，常將強烈的情感灌注在每一件他認為值得描寫的事物上，透過不斷的思考和淬煉，從而創作出既注重客觀時空背景，同時也兼重個人主觀個性、思想的庫爾培寫實主義繪畫。
為釐清庫爾培寫實主義的特色，本論文從近代以來寫實主義的發展談起，以明瞭庫爾培從前輩藝術大師得到的啟發與師承。再者，以十九世紀上半葉革命抗爭頻仍的社會為背景，論述其對庫爾培思想上的衝擊，從而促成民主意識的深植。最後，則依題材、形式兩個層面對庫爾培的作品進行分析，檢視其人物畫與風景畫中，畫家主觀意識涉入之深淺，來探討庫爾培寫實主義中對客觀寫實主義之承續，及對主觀意識之開發。希冀本篇結合庫爾培寫實主義繪畫與十九世紀法國社會思潮之論文，能對研究十九世紀法國歷史提供另一途逕的認識與理解。
