Roman Jakobson
The present study investigates the contemporary Chinese
Christian language used in Taiwan. The author was initiated by
Jakobson's model of language to analyze the Christian registers
from a linguistic point of view. Dell Hymes' ethnography of
speaking is further adopted to examine minutely the components
of the Christian prayer. This research helps non-Christians to
understand the situations, the act sequences, and the purposes
of this speech event. Another interest in this study is the
presentation and interpretation of Christian registers,
including Christian jargons and slogans. This part of the
research is designed as a questionnaire to inquire both
Christians and non-Christians of their acceptability of those
slogans and their familiarity with those jargons. A closer
look into the characteristics of the Christian registers
displays their semantic devices, such as the use of metaphors
and similes, their stylistic devices, such as the use of the
idiomatic expressions. Some of these are further discussed in
terms of their functions. The results of the questionnaire
suggest that one's religion, participation time, and
participation frequency significantly affect the language user'
s acceptability of the Christian slogans and his familiarity
with the Christian jargons. Besides, such sociolinguistic
perspectives as ideology, cultural taboo, and group identity
have also been found to play a role in the hearer's acceptance
or refusal of such religious expressions.
